Kataragama

Kataragama is a sacred pilgrimage town in Sri Lanka’s south-east, located near the edge of the Yala region. It is known for the multi-religious Kataragama temple complex (Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya), where Buddhists, Hindus, and indigenous Vedda traditions converge in worship. The town becomes especially vibrant during the annual Esala festival, when devotees gather for processions, fire walking, and rituals.
