Overview

The Magic of Ritigala

Ritigala is a mysterious ancient forest monastery and nature reserve located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, about 40 kilometres from Anuradhapura. Rising above the surrounding plains, Ritigala is the island’s highest mountain in the dry zone and is steeped in legends linked to the Ramayana and early Buddhist history. Hidden beneath dense forest are the well-preserved ruins of a secluded monastery, including stone pathways, meditation platforms, reservoirs, and bridges built over 2,000 years ago. The cooler climate and rich biodiversity make the area a haven for wildlife, birds, and rare plant species. Unlike Sri Lanka’s larger archaeological sites, Ritigala offers a peaceful atmosphere where history and nature blend together. It is an ideal destination for travellers seeking quiet exploration, scenic forest walks, and a unique glimpse into the island’s ancient monastic heritage.
