Overview

The Magic of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most historically significant destinations and an essential part of the Cultural Triangle. Once the island’s political and religious capital, the city flourished for more than a thousand years and is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its vast sacred landscape contains ancient monasteries, royal ruins, monumental stupas and reservoirs that reveal the scale and sophistication of early Sri Lankan civilisation.

Unlike a conventional archaeological site, Anuradhapura remains an active centre of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage. At its heart is the revered Sri Maha Bodhi, traditionally believed to have grown from a branch of the Bodhi tree beneath which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Nearby, impressive monuments such as Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri rise above peaceful temple grounds, forested pathways and ancient lakes.

The atmosphere of Anuradhapura is spacious, spiritual and reflective. Travellers can explore its extensive heritage area while observing religious traditions that continue to form part of everyday life. With its remarkable history, living cultural importance and tranquil surroundings, Anuradhapura offers a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and ancient civilisation.
