The Magic of Kandy

Set among the green hills of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Kandy is a city where history, spirituality and everyday life come together. Once the capital of the island’s last independent kingdom, it remains one of Sri Lanka’s most culturally significant destinations and an essential stop on a journey through the country.

At the heart of Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. Nearby, Kandy Lake offers a peaceful setting for a stroll, while the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya provide beautifully landscaped grounds filled with tropical plants, palms and impressive avenues of trees.

Kandy is also renowned for the Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated cultural and religious festivals. Held annually, the procession brings together traditional drummers, dancers, ceremonial performers and elaborately decorated elephants in a spectacular expression of Kandyan heritage and Buddhist tradition. For travellers visiting at the right time of year, it can be one of the most memorable cultural experiences in Sri Lanka.

Beyond the city centre, Kandy opens into a landscape of forested hills, gardens and scenic viewpoints. Travellers can experience traditional Kandyan dance and drumming, explore the peaceful trails of Udawattakele Forest Reserve, visit local craft workshops or simply enjoy the slower rhythm of the hill country.

Kandy also makes a natural connection between Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the tea-covered highlands. Whether included for its heritage, scenery, gardens, festivals or cultural experiences, the city adds a distinctive sense of place to a tailor-made journey through Sri Lanka.
